August 'Articles of Interest:' Armstrong's Giant Leap; India's Youth Cricket; $1 Billion for Apple; Jenn Howard Music; & Laughing at Isaac.

August 2012

Greetings Students, Parents, Friends, and Faithful Readers:

After a busy summer hiatus, I am now settled here in New Orleans, honored to be joining the vibrant learning community at Lusher Charter School.  As recap, a goal of Wagner’s Ed Matters Blog is to share stimulating, quirky, inquiring, and unique stories, from near and afar, while inviting discourse, contemplation, and interactive feedback.

The passing of Neil Armstrong evokes renewed awe of his amazing accomplishments.  In his own words, he continues to boldly step beyond, maintaining his characteristic humor, modesty, and humanity, a hero beyond measure.

There is cause for much celebration in India, where the under-19 national cricket squad follows in the country’s winning footsteps in international cricket, winning the 2012 Cricket Youth World Cup.

Although details from Apple’s $1 billion dollar damages award over Samsung for patent infringements are not yet fully known, the repercussions from this case will likely be pervasive and long lasting.

Sadly, the digital age continues to exact its toll on historic and small town movie theaters, as told in Resort Towns Face A Last Picture Show.

The Times~Picayune made national news when it announced its plans to reduce publishing to only 3 days a week, devoting more resources to “on-line content.”  Time will tell what signal this foretells for the future of print journalism.

As Lagniappe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagniappe) to our returning to New Orleans, it is an absolute delight to reconnect with previous students and families from my days back at Metairie Park Country Day School.  Last Friday, I heard a fabulous jazz performance by Jenn Howard, CDS Class of 1996.  Visit Jenn’s website to learn more about her musical awesomeness.

And as a hopeful observation on the torrents of news circulating here in the Gulf South, the name Isaac, as a male given name, derives from the Hebrew word meaning “laughter.”  Here’s hoping that this storm inspires more humor than tragedy, particularly in arriving on the exact 7-year anniversary of his destructive cousin, Katrina.

That’s all for now, as I hunker-down to wait-out the wind and rain from Hurricane Isaac. I welcome your comments, suggestions, and feedback.

With sincere regards,

Sam Wagner
